Newport softball headed to state

Newport pitcher Kat Wood worked another complete game in the circle and led the Knights to the 4A state softball tournament with a 5-4 win over Snohomish in the district crossover game.

After losing its tournament opener 6-5 to Bothell, Newport rebounded with four consecutive victories with its back against the wall to punch a ticket to state for the first time since 2008 and only the third time in school history, the first in Class 4A.

The first of those wins came in an 11-1 game against Skyline, before a 9-3 win over Redmond to earn a spot in the third-place game. The Knights picked up a 6-1 win over the Beavers before Wood and the offense did just enough to get past Snohomish and into the state tournament.

Kaitlin Sahlinger had a pair of RBI in the win over Snohomish, and Indiana Coxey and Madelyn Shelby also knocked in a run.

The 4A state softball tournament is May 24-25 at Merkel Sports Complex in Spokane.

Saints take districts on golf course

Interlake followed its 3A KingCo golf title with another last week, winning the Sea-King District championship by six points over Bellevue.

Aleana Groenhout, who won the KingCo title, finished second behind Lakeside’s Libby Ramsey.

Teammate Danielle Niemann was fifth, and will head to state along with Groenhout and freshman Delaney Douglass, who finished in a tie for seventh.

Bellevue was led by the duo of Tiffany Huang and Katie Levy, with Huang in sixth and Levy part of the seventh place tie.

Alexis Choi is also headed to state, as is Lauren Patrick.
