Newport finished the most prolific season in school history on the volleyball court at the 4A state tournament in Lacey, winning its first two matches to advance to the semi-finals before finishing fourth.
An opening round win over Spanaway Lake sent the KingCo champs to a quarterfinal match with Central Valley, which went the same route as the conference title win over Skyline.
After dropping the first two games 17-25, Newport won three straight to earn its spot in Saturday’s semi-finals.
A 25-20 win put the Knights up early in its Saturday match against Curtis, but three straight losses, the final by only two points, ended their state title hopes.
That match sent them to the third-place contest against Emerald Ridge before a 3-1 loss ended the season with the program’s highest finish ever at a state tournament.
Newport, which did not lose a conference match all season, also picked up the highest finish of a 4A KingCo team at the tournament, with Skyline seventh and Bothell eighth.
