Bellevue junior Michael Raine needed only 86 pitches (51 strikes) to work a complete game four-hitter and propel his team to a 5-1 win over Sammamish in a 3A KingCo match-up on Monday. Raine was simply masterful for the majority of the afternoon, mixing a solid four-seam fastball with a sharp biting curve that was simply devastating to righties. He issued only a single walk and struck out nine Totems for the game.
Sammamish took a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the fourth inning after a Chris Strain double and RBI from Tyler Hormel. But Bellevue answered with a pair of runs in the fifth, another in the sixth and two more in the seventh to take control and make sure they would head back to Wolverine Way with their second consecutive league victory.
Senior Reid Wagner powered the offense with a 3-3 day, also knocking in three runs. Sophomore Jack Meggs chipped in with a triple and scored a pair of runs while Jack Perkins doubled for the Wolverines in the game.
Freshman Joe Giacchetti took the loss for Sammamish, which has lost four in a row and five of six since beginning the season 4-0.
The Wolverines next face Juanita on Wednesday at home. The Totems will also play at home on Wednesday against Mt. Si.
Knights bats heat up just in time in win over Garfield
Newport was in grave danger of dropping their second straight to a Crown division opponent through the first four innings of their game against Garfield at home on Monday afternoon. The Bulldogs charged out to a 5-0 lead, roughing up starter Erik Jensen and forcing Newport coach Hal DeBerry to go to his bullpen early.
The Knights are glad he did.
Newport junior Aaron Sandefur entered the game in the third inning and held the visitors from Seattle scoreless through five innings of relief work, striking out six en route to his first win of the year. With Sandefur keeping Garfield from padding their lead, the offense was finally able to get to Garfield starter John Trupin, plating three runs in the bottom half of the fifth to cut the lead to a single run before getting two more off reliever Hayes Gorecki in the bottom of the sixth.
Jared Fisher continued to impress at the plate, going 2-4 with three more RBI to bring his team leading total to 12 for the year. Daniel Altchech also had a solid day at the plate for the Knights, going 2-3 with a pair of RBI.
Newport will meet Ballard on Wednesday with a scheduled first pitch of 3:45 at Whitman Field.
