For the second time in seven days, Bellevue pitcher Michael Raine went the distance on the hill for the Bellevue Wolverines, this time keying a 3-0 win over Lake Washington on Monday at Bellevue High School.
Raine frustrated the Kangs all afternoon, working a sharp breaking curveball that left righties frozen in their spikes in the batters box. The junior allowed seven hits (with no more than two coming in any inning) and only a single walk while striking out five, all on only 94 pitches.
Jeff Van Orman continued his impressive output at the plate, notching two of Bellevue’s six hits with a pair of doubles and also scoring a run.
Once again, the Wolverines made the most of their opportunities offensively, winning despite being outhit by Lake Washington but leaving three fewer men on base than did the Kangs.
Bellevue has now taken six straight games, all against KingCo competition and moving their mark to 6-1 the first time through the KingCo slate. The second half will mirror the first and will begin with a stiff test against league leading Mount Si, who is unbeaten in conference play and sits alone in first place with a 7-0 KingCo mark.
That game will be on Wednesday at Bellevue High School with first pitch coming at 4:30 p.m.
Saints roughed up by top Cats
Interlake fell behind early to the 2A/3A KingCo leading Mount Si Wildcats and never recovered, falling 13-1.
The Wildcats knocked out sixteen hits and were also aided by three Interlake miscues in the field. Griffin Sutich took the loss for the Saints, who now sit in a two-way tie for second place with Lake Washington.
Joey Button accounted for the lone Interlake run with a solo homerun. Marc Linn’s club will next face Liberty, again at home, on Wednesday with a first pitch time of 4:30 p.m.
Islanders hammer Totems in five
It took only five innings for the Mercer Island baseball team to put away Sammamish, 19-2 on Monday at Sammamish High School.
The Islanders led 5-0 after two before scoring six in the top of the third and four in their half of both the fourth and fifth innings to overwhelm the Totems.
Ryan Hashimoto took the loss for Sammamish, which fell to 1-6 in league play and now sits at the bottom of the conference.
The Totems will try to get back on track on Wednesday against Lake Washington, again at home with a start time of 4 p.m.
Interlake freshman steals show, shoots 47 at Tam o’Shanter
Aleana Groenhout bested the field by three strokes on Monday at Tam o’Shanter golf course, shooting a round of 47 and finishing in first place to help the Saints to a team score victory. Interlake finished ahead of Sammamish, 283-298. The Kangs finished in third with a team score of 317.
The freshman Groenhout overwhelmed golfers from both squads and was the only member of any of the three to shoot below 50 on the day. Anna Jessen from Lake Washington ended the day in second with a 50 with the next in line being the 55 from Amy Ishida of Sammamish.
Amanda Bergstrom shot a 56 for the Totems and Lizzie Norton and Ellen Howie both checked in at 57 for the Saints in the win.
Kangs outlast Wolverines on hard court
Karen Park and the duo of Megan Urquhart and Michelle Han picked up wins for the Bellevue tennis team, but it was not enough against a deep Lake Washington squad on Monday as the Wolverines dropped the meet by a final count of 5-2.
London Lee opened things with a strong showing against Lake Washington’s Kelly Watanabe, losing in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
Park won the number four singles match over Joyce Lin, also in three sets, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 to give her team their only singles victory on the afternoon.
The number one doubles match went to Bellevue’s Urquhart and Han, who won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4 over the LW pair of Kelsey Connell and Shannin Ong.
The Wolverines will be on the court again this Thursday at Liberty High School.
