Interlake was on the attack throughout its 2-0 opening round win over Lakewood in the first round of the 2A girls soccer state tournament last night.
The Saints’ attack, which kept pressure on the Cougar defense most of the night, cracked a 0-0 tie in the 26th minute on an unassisted goal from Emma Bergstrom, the regular season conference scoring leader.
That would be plenty for goalkeeper Catie Getzendaner, who held Lakewood scoreless for her eighth shutout of the year and second straight to start the playoffs.
League MVP Isabel Farrell added an insurance tally in the 76th minute to secure the win and send her team in the 2A quarterfinals, where they will face Fife. That game will be on Saturday at 3 pm at Sunset Chevrolet Stadium, on the campus of Sumner High School.
Tara Ghassemikia, an outisde defender for Interlake, was not completely satisfied with the victory, claiming that Interlake could have capitalized on a few more opportunities.
“We definitely could have executed better,” Ghassemikia said. “We had a lot of missed opportunities.”
But she was quick to point out that being able to overcome those shortfalls is key for a team looking to make a deep playoff run.
“Everyone played with heart – from the eleven girls that started the game to each of our team mates screaming for the bench. We played as a family, and that’s what made us successful.”
