To say Interlake tennis coach Matthew Perlman was a bit nervous during Saturday’s 2A doubles state title match would be an understatement.
“I was pacing,” Perlman said. “I had one kid reporting the scores because I had to sequester myself.”
He needn’t have worried. As they had all tournament, juniors Jayson Shieh and Nikita Nosov dominated, winning the doubles title in a 6-4, 7-5 defeat of Sehome’s William Giller and Micah Koenig at the Nordstrom Tennis Center at the University of Washington.
Shieh and Nosov, who helped the Saints capture the district title a week prior, did not drop a set during the entire tournament.
“They were cruising,” Perlman said. “Just dominating tennis.”
Shieh and Nosov knocked off teams from Ellensburg, Sehome and Selah to reach the championship match.
“It’s a real thrill for Interlake,” Perlman said. “I was so proud of those guys, it was just incredible.”
It was the first title for Interlake tennis in over 20 years, Pearlman said.
Tai Pham went 1-2 in singles competition for Interlake, as the Saints finished third as a team in the tournament.
The Saints weren’t the only school to capture a doubles title however, as Sammamish’s Anissa-Bryant Swift and Malia Lum took home the 3A girls doubles title with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Catherine Fitch and Catherine Phelps of Lakeside at the Vancouver Tennis Complex.
Bryant-Swift and Lum were able to overcome a stiff match against Union’s Megan Carter and Helen Tam in the quarterfinals, winning 6-4, 6-7(7), 6-4 before rolling over Erica Leong and Kelly Crandall of Mercer Island 6-3, 6-1 in the semi-finals.
Bellevue’s Kevin Kosanke finished fourth in 3A singles, while his brother Zach Kosanke teamed with CJ Smeraldo to finish fifth in doubles after falling to eventual state champions Andrew LaCava and Jason Bediones of Seattle Prep in the semi-finals.
Sammamish’s Chad Nunn and Andrew Nguyen went 1-2 in boys doubles, while Bellevue’s London Lee went the same 1-2 in girls singles.
The Bellevue boys finished third, while the Sammamish girls took fourth.
Thanks to strong singles play and their depth in the tournament, the Newport girls tennis team finished in a three-way tie for the team title with Decatur and Kamiakin in the 4A state tournament, played at Kamiakin High School and the Tri-City Court Club in Kennewick.
Amie Vo finished in fifth place in singles competition for the Knights, losing to Elaine Balk of Kamiak 6-2, 6-0 in the third/fifth place match.Vo won her first two matches of the tournament before losing to Antonia Liebenow of Lake Stevens in the semi-finals.
