Ellsworth blanks third straight, Totems cruise

Sammamish goalie Stuart Ellsworth kept up his stingy ways in net for the Totems soccer team on Friday, shutting out his third consecutive opponent and paving the way to a 5-0 2A/3A KingCo win over Liberty.

Miguel Hernandez opened the scoring with a strike in the opening minute of the game off an assist from Beau Blanchard and Nick Rooney put the visitors in a 2-0 hole with a goal from Kitt Hawkins six minutes later.

Hawkins would get on the board himself with a goal from Tommy Danielson before Austin Allison poured in the fourth Sammamish goal of the half from Hawkins at the 39 minute mark. Danielson and Allison connected in the 53rd minute for the fifth and final score of the evening to cap an impressive night for the league leading Totems.

At 10-0, Sammamish now finds itself two wins away from clinching an outright league title. The Totems will face Interlake at home on Tuesday before traveling to Mercer Island on Friday in a game that will match the top two teams in the 2A/3A KingCo standings.

Lovas nets two, Wolverines overwhelm Rebs

David Lovas put in his fifth and sixth goals of the season for the Bellevue soccer team on Friday and the Wolverines maneuvered past Juanita by a final score of 3-0.

Brett Hightower struck first for Bellevue when he scored on an assist from Ryan Harber in the tenth minute to give his team an early advantage.

Lovas netted the first of his two goals in the 25th minute when Evan Girling found him and would hit again in the 40th minute on an unassisted goal to extend the Wolverines advantage to 3-0 and close the scoring for the evening.

Bellevue goalkeeper Kyle Vascovitz picked up his third shutout of the year in the win for the Wolverines, which has taken three consecutive matches since dropping a one-goal game to Sammamish.

Baseball

Strother’s complete game performance leads Saints over Bellevue

After a heart-breaking loss to Juanita sandwiched between a pair of lopsided setbacks, the Interlake baseball team badly needed to find a win and they did exactly that on Friday against Bellevue, 4-3.

The Saints wasted little time setting the tone with a three run top of the first before Bellevue got on the board with a pair of runs in the second to close the gap to a single run.

But JT Capers would score on an RBI single from Carl Snaring in the top of the fourth for what would prove the deciding run as the Saints hung on for the win.

Austin Strother went the distance on the mound for Interlake, striking out six, walking two and allowing seven hits.

Sam Finfer had a 4-4 day at the plate with a double and RBI for Interlake in the win.

Totems explode in win over Rebels

Sammamish, losers of seven of their previous eight games, got back on track in a big way with a 15-4 win over Juanita on Friday.

After falling in a quick 2-0 hole after the top of the first, the Totems scored seven runs over the next four innings before cutting loose with eight in the bottom of the fifth to pick up the mercy-rule victory.

Freshman Joe Giacchetti earned the win for the Totems, who next square off with Interlake on Monday at Interlake High School.

Knights survive non-leauge test

Newport picked up their fourth straight win on Saturday in a non-league contest against Rainier, coming back with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win 8-7. Nate Anderson had a 2-4 day at the plate, scoring a run and picking up the game-winning RBI.

Aaron Sandefur went 2 innings and two-thirds allowing three hits and striking out five of the eight men he faced to get the win.

Newport will face league leader Redmond on Wednesday at home.

Softball

Wolverines softball way too much for Saints

Bellevue continued to establish itself as the number one contender to the champion Juanita Rebels in 2A/3A KingCo softball, taking advantage of five Interlake errors en route to a 8-0 win.

The Wolverines scored two runs in each of the first three innings off Interlake pitcher Erin Scott and banged out 13 hits in the game.

Marika McCarthy, Katie Savard, Lisa Bennett, Anjani Briggs and Alicia Breyer each had two hits for Bellevue while Emily Fleischman allowed only five hits total to pick up the complete game victory. Fleischman struck out four and walked only a pair on the hill and 68 of her 108 pitches went for strikes.

The Knights scored all seven of their runs in the first three innings and withstood a furious comeback effort from the Kangs to hold on for a 7-6 win on Saturday at Husky Softball Stadium.

Tennis

Wolverines outlast Liberty on hard court

Bellevue used superior depth on both the singles and doubles sides to run away from Liberty, winning five of seven matches against the Patriots.

The Wolverines took the first three singles matches, led by the straight set victories of London Lee (6-2, 6-1) and Sabrina Tu (6-2, 6-1). Anya Rubinstein dropped the first set of her match against Liberty’s Kristy Branstom, but rebounded to earn a hard fought three set win (1-6, 6-4, 7-6).

The Patriots kept their hopes alive with a win in the number one doubles match, but would watch as the Bellevue pairs of Karen Park and Michelle Han and then Gracie Odegard and Nicole Baqai took the final two doubles contests to secure the team win.
