Unable to meet as a team due to school closures, prep squads in the area are doing anything possible to keep their chemistry.
At Sammamish, the Totems (11-3, 3-1) are in the mix at the top of 3A KingCo and had games against fellow contender Mercer Island and cross-town Interlake wiped out by the storm. It is unclear when those games will be rescheduled and Newton said his team has been watching film online in the interim.
“I just told them when I hear something from our Athletic Director, I’ll let them know,” Newton said.
Sammamish is slated to meet Lake Washington at home on Tuesday before traveling to Snoqualmie for a game against Mount Si on Friday. Much of the Snoqualmie Valley was still without power as of Saturday.
Just like Newton, Skyline coach J. Jay Davis was hopeful of getting back on the court Saturday.
“I know a lot of our players are members at 24 Hour Fitness and have been getting workouts in,” Skyline head coach J. Jay Davis said. “In between power outages and snow storms.”
The past week’s storm took a toll on Sammamish, knocking out power to thousands, leaving the roadways an icy mess and prep teams unable to get back on the court until Saturday.
The Spartans were one of three teams with a bye scheduled this week and have rescheduled the match up with Inglemoor for Tuesday, Jan. 17. The Plateau rivalry with Eastlake that was supposed to be played Saturday will be rescheduled next week, according to Davis. The coach also added that in his team’s case, the break could have come at a worse time and will actually allow several players nursing injuries get closer to full strength.
But with conference and district tournaments looming, some teams will be put under the gun to complete the regular season in an abbreviated time frame.
“I don’t envy the teams that have to play seven games in 12 days to finish the regular season,” Davis said. “It could really have an effect on the way the playoffs shake out.”
