Totems wrap-up KingCo title, Knights eye Redmond

Boys Soccer

The Sammamish soccer team overcame an early deficit on Friday and beat Mercer Island by a final score of 2-1 to clinch the 2A/3A KingCo title.

Jordan Morris got the Islanders out in front with a strike on an assist from Alex Wood in the 26th minute, but it would not be enough against the versatile Totems, who would even the score 12 minutes later on a Kitt Hawkins goal with an assist from Chris Lider.

The teams would remain tied at the half and through the first part of the second stanza until Taylor Berg put his team in front with an unassisted goal in the 60th minute that would prove to be the difference.

With the win, the unbeaten Totems seal their spot in the 3A state tournament and have won their first regular season league title under coach Darryl Gonyea.

Girling’s hat trick gives Wolverines win

Bellevue’s Evan Girling had yet to score a single goal this season as the Wolverines entered their match-up against Lake Washington last Friday. Apparently, the Kangs were just what he needed to get his offense on track.

Girling got his team on the board in just the sixth minute with an unassisted goal and that was just the beginning of what would prove to be a career day for the Bellevue senior.

In the 29th minute it was Girling again finding the back of the net to put his team on top 2-0 off an assist from Cole Mora and in the 48th, Brett Hightower found Girling again to complete the hat trick.

With Girling providing all the offense they would need, keeper Kyle Vascovitz held up his end of the bargain and kept the Kangs off the board with his fourth shutout of the year (Interlake, Liberty, Juanita, Lake Washington).

The win was crucial for the Wolverines in the standings and keeps them ahead of the Kangs by a game in the win column.

Interlake tops Mount Si

Nick Roth, Ben Titus and Eric Ritter all netted goals as the Interlake Saints picked up their second league win of the season, 3-1 over Mount Si on Friday in Snoqualmie.

Newport pushes past Skyline as first-place showdown looms

The Knights won their fifth consecutive on Friday, 4-2 over the visiting Skyline Spartans. Jared Fisher tossed six innings and a third, allowing only a single run on seven hits. The senior struck out ten Spartans while walking only three on the game.

Cole Wiper took the ball from Fisher in the seventh inning and finished the job, moving his team-leading ERA to 0.42 on the year.

The Knights were scheduled to face league bottom-feeder Eastlake on Monday, but that game has already been canceled due to weather and field conditions. That means their next (scheduled) game will be when the Redmond Mustangs come to Newport on Tuesday in a game that will likely decide the 4A KingCo regular season champion.

Wildcats run away from Sammamish

The first and last place teams in the league met when Sammamish traveled to Mount Si on Friday and the Totems looked as though they belonged, at least for the first three innings.

Coach Tim Ahern’s bunch twice took leads of a single run before the Wildcats flexed their muscle, eventually earning a 6-2 win.

Bellevue back on track

The Wolverines finally busted a four game losing streak, beating Juanita by a final score of 8-3 on Friday night at Lee Johnson Field at Peter Kirk Park in Kirkland.

Wolverines stunned by Saints

Interlake found themselves in more than a little bit of trouble early against Bellevue- trailing 4-0 after one inning and facing one of the top pitchers in the league in Emily Fleischman.

But the Saints refused to fold their tent and climbed back with three-spots in the fourth and sixth to close the gap before pushing the game to extras with a run in the seventh.

The game remained tied in the first extra frame before Megan Foy reached base on an error, took second on a passed ball and eventually scored on a Morgan McCaslin single to give Interlake an 8-7 win.

Bellevue would threaten in the bottom half of the inning when Katie Savard belted a one out double and Lisa Bennett reached base after being hit by a pitch, but Bennett would be doubled-up on a ball of the bat of Anjani Briggs one batter later to end the threat and the game.

The loss was the first of year inside the conference for the Wolverines to a team other than Juanita, who now find themselves in a virtual tie for second place with Mount Si.

Liberty blasts Sammamish

The Totems were no match for the visiting Patriots and fell behind early in a 17-3 five inning game. The Totems did manage seven hits, which was only two fewer than Liberty.

Newport dumped by Ballard

The Beavers jumped on Newport early, taking a 6-0 lead at the end of three innings and holding on for a 6-1 4A KingCo win.
