A pair of wrestling champions will lead Bellevue and Newport to this weekend's Regional meet, where Mat Classic spots will be on the line.

Bellevue junior Christian Villani won the sub-regional championship at 145 pounds, punching his ticket to Regionals with a technical fall win over Mount Si’s Riley Absher in the finals.

Alec Palander was a second place finisher at 220, losing an overtime match for the championship.

Chandler Ewing was third at 145 pounds and Garrett Williams was a third place finisher at 138. John Mancuso (160), Nathan Smith (120) and Zach England (195) finished fifth to earn Regional spots.

The Wolverines will be at Skyline on Saturday, Feb. 15 for the Regional meet with 3A state spots on the line.

Five from Sammamish moving on

Sammamish will send five wrestlers to its 2A Regional round meet, led by sub-regional runners-up Juan Quijada (120) and James Tate (182).

Rathtana Duong was a third place finisher at 126 pounds, while Max Hummer (170) and Jake Johnson (195) finished fourth in their respective brackets.

Mirsa Perez finished fifth in the girls sub-regional, and will be an alternate to regionals.

The top four finishers from next Saturday’s Regional meet at Squalicum High School will move on to the 2A State Championships in the Tacoma Dome.

Newport gets title

Newport junior Albert Ballesteros won the title at 285 pounds, beating Inglemoor’s Mike Milcarek in the championship match to give the Knights their only title of the day.

Junior Diego Dwyer also made this weekend’s Regional round, finishing second at 120 pounds after losing the title match to Skyline’s Nate Swanson.

Bellevue Christian’s Brandon Pearson was second at 195 pounds in the Vikings’ 1A meet, losing by injury defeat in the finals.

Senior Tate Razor was second at 220 and junior Daniel Young was also a second place finisher, falling in the title match at 285.
