Villani, Trull give Wolverines Pac Coast titles | Prep wrestling roundup, rankings

A pair of Bellevue wrestlers on opposite ends of the weight class spectrum brought home tournament titles.

Christian Villani and Jimmy Trull both captured Pac Coast Wrestling Tournament titles for coach Tom Ovens and the Wolverines to close out 2011, each maneuvering through five matches to bring home the crowns.

The Bellevue head coach said the titles were the first for the Wolverines at the Pac Coast, which featured 35 teams and 400 wrestlers from Washington and Oregon.

Villani, a freshman wrestling at 106 pounds, was unseeded when the tournament began and faced the top-seeded wrestler in the state in Dean Reginio of Timberline.

The youngster was far from intimidated.

Villani earned a technical fall victory over Reginio in the quarterfinals and pinned Noah Cuzzeto, a state participant last season from Edmonds-Woodway in the tournament final to win his weight class.

Trull, the fourth-ranked 220 pounder in the state according to Washington Wrestling Report, brought home a third championship in the month of December after notching four pins and a decision.

He eliminated the second and fourth seeds in his weight class, including a pin of second-seeded Stone Hart of Timberline in the finals.

Trull also won the Hammerhead Invitational and the Spud Walley Invitational.

Both looked primed for a run at an individual state title, which would be the first for Bellevue since 1977.
