Seattle University struck first but Washington took advantage of a fielding error and the Huskies defeated the Redhawks 5-2 at Bannerwood Park.
It was the first meeting between the two teams in 24 years.
Seattle U jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by Riley Tompkins in the second inning, but the Huskies (8-10) stormed back after a Redhawks error was followed up by a UW home run by Pierce Rankin. Troy Scott added a two-run double in the eighth inning and was brought home by an Andy Smith single that gave the Huskies a 5-1 lead.
Tompkins added another sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth to cut into the deficit, but Washington reliever Adam Cimber notched a strikeout to end the rally and the game.
The Redhawks (3-16) outhit the Huskies 9-6. Cullen Hendrickson and Nate Roberts each picked up two hits. Seattle U will get another shot at the Huskies Monday at 5 p.m. at Husky Ballpark in Seattle.
