Five times Friday night, Catelyn Webber stared at an open basket with no defenders anywhere near her.
Five times the Bellevue senior made Interlake pay with huge baskets.
Webber shot 5-for-5 from three-point range and scored 17 points as Bellevue defeated Interlake 62-41 in league play.
Webber, who also had three rebounds and a steal, led a Bellevue offense that saw 10 different players score points. But it was the 5-foot-9 senior who did the most damage, as she hit three three-pointers in the first quarter to give Bellevue a lead it would never relinquish.
“You can’t let Catelyn Webber get five wide-open looks at the basket,” said Interlake coach Scott Marcum, who missed the game while serving a one-game suspension for an ejection. “She’s too talented for that.”
Webber’s three-pointer to open the game set the tone for Bellevue, which won by 21 points despite turning the ball over 22 times.
“We didn’t take care of the ball as well as we should have, but our defense was there,” said Bellevue coach Ron Tinnin.
The Wolverines (6-5, 4-2 KingCo 3A/2A) defense turned in a much different performance than the first meeting between the two teams, when Interlake’s standout 6-foot-2 senior Sarah Anderegg poured in 27 points in a 67-54 Bellevue victory.
Bellevue double and triple teamed Anderegg, who ended up scoring 19 points – but only six in the first half, when the Wolverines began to pour onto their lead. Bellevue led 32-19 at the half.
“The kids take it personal when someone scores that many points on them,” Tinnin said.
Bellevue had a gaggle of players see action – 13 different players got in the game – with 10 players scoring points.
“I think that the key is that everyone on the team feels that they have a part, a role on the team,” Webber said. “Everyone contributes.”
Natalie Andereson added nine points for Bellevue and Kelly Meggs – in her third game of the season – scored eight for the Wolverines.
Anderegg’s 19 points led all scorers. Litia Ngauamo added 11 points and five rebounds for Interlake (8-7, 1-6).
Interlake, which participates in the 2A playoffs, needs to finish the season with around an overall record of .500 to make the playoffs, Marcum said, as the Saints need a better winning percentage than the third place team from the Olympic or Nisqually Leagues.
“If we can get to .500 overall, I think we’re a virtual lock,” Marcum said. “We just have to get our foot in the door.”
Bellevue, meanwhile, sits firmly in third place in KingCo behind Mercer Island and Juanita.
“We haven’t put together four quarters of offense and defense yet,” Tinnin said. “Our best basketball is still to come.”
