Wolverines clinch berth at the state tournament

Bellevue girls basketball team remains undefeated

The perfect season is still alive and well for the Bellevue Wolverines girls basketball team.

The Wolverines cruised to a convincing 79-26 win against the Wilson Rams in a winner-to-state, loser-out regional playoff contest on Feb. 27 at Bellevue College. Bellevue improved their overall record to 26-0 with the win. Bellevue had a paltry 16-10 lead at end of the first quarter but outscored Wilson 63-16 in the final 24 minutes of action en route to an emphatic triumph.

The 53-point margin of victory was the largest score differential in the Class 3A regional round by a whopping 34 points. Arlington defeated Bishop Blanchet 49-30 in their regional matchup.

“It was kind of a slow start but really it was about getting over that tension and the importance of the game. We started having fun and were sharing the ball. The girls played hard,” Bellevue head coach Leah Krautter said.

Bellevue senior Tatiana Streun, who scored 20 points against the Rams, is eagerly anticipating the Class 3A state tournament this weekend in Tacoma. The Wolverines are the favorites to capture the Class 3A title.

“It is going to be one that we’re not going to forget,” Streun said of this year’s upcoming state tourney at the Tacoma Dome.“This is our final year to actually do something coming out with five seniors. We have worked so hard for this and this is the last year to try to actually get the title.”

Krautter said her team is excited about the opportunity.

“We’ve been focusing on one game at a time and now the final week is here. We’re excited to play some good competitive teams,” she said.

Bellevue will face Mount Spokane at 3:45 p.m. on March 3 in the Class 3A quarterfinals at the Tacoma Dome.
