Bellevue Wolverines softball head coach Heather Tracy believes in taking calculated risks on the softball field.
The aggressive approach paid dividends in Bellevue’s 6-4 victory against the Mercer Island Islanders on April 17 in Bellevue. The Wolverines had five stolen bases and recorded three triples in the victory.
“We definitely want to be aggressive on the bases. We’ve had a couple of games where we have been really aggressive and have been close to making it work for us. Today we finally broke through so we’re excited about that,” Tracy said.
Stuart Buxton, who blasted a triple and a RBI in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Wolverines a 6-1 lead, was thrilled to see her team get back in the win column. Bellevue improved its overall record to 3-6 with the win.
“It is a really big deal and is a great accomplishment for our team,” Buxton said. “It helps us and gives us more momentum moving forward.”
Bellevue pitcher Dejah Rogers went the distance in the pitching circle, allowing just five hits while striking out six Mercer Island batters in a complete-game win.
“Dejah did a great job out here leading the team. She works hard and she stuck with her pitches,” Tracy said.
Tracy said her squad is focused on closing out the regular season strong in their quest to reach the postseason.
“We are competing and definitely have an opportunity to move up in the standings. It’s not just our goal to sneak into the playoffs. she said. “We got nine games left and I feel we can definitely finish really strong.”
